While I’m here in California training with my road bike, I still kind of miss my fixed gear which is sitting in storage in Hawaii. “Sigh” 13 MORE days.

today’s ride..

Today’s ride was a last minute thing. I decided to ride to Hawaii Kai from UH. Coming down Kahala I passed a group of young cyclists (about my age) cruising through. As I pass them, the lead guy decided to catch up to me. As they did he started laughing at me and my bike, slowly whispering to the others. Mind me, this guy has a pretty nice bicycle. A 2011 Scott Addict (carbon frameset) with a full SRAM Red groupo matched to a Mavic Cosmic wheelset. I take off my earphones and simply ask “Can I help you with something?” He proceeds to tell me that my bike is a joke.. WHAT.. He asks why I ride a steel frame rather than something lighter such as Alu, or Carbon. I reply “because steel flexes which makes it comfortable since I do long distance rides..I simply do not care for the weight since it is myself that has a limit on how fast I can go, not my bicycle. He ignores what I have said and calls it shit. Mind me, my bike is not shit. I have upgraded components to my likings which make my bicycle quite quick and light. The only heavy part of my bicycle is my steel frame. I enjoy my frame quite simply because it is my first frame which I have built and bought myself. He continues to blab on and talk about his track bicycle, but at this point I continued to ride ignoring them. As we have reached the Kalanialaole Hwy they’re group begins to sprint off with the guy giving me the finger and says once again “you’re bike is shit”. At this point, I was getting pretty ticked off. They sprint at full speed leaving me behind at about 10 car lengths. I tried keeping pace but I just did not want to follow. About halfway down the highway I noticed their pace begin to slow down due to their quick sprint in the beginning. At this moment I simply over take them and as I past the guy who taunted me I shout out “kiss my steel frame’s ass”. I smirk and passed him and never saw them again as I sprinted through Hawaii Kai.

Moral: What the fuck is up with people nowadays. Yeah people have money to spend on bicycles and what not. But just because you do, it 1) Does not make you better. 2) Does not make you faster. 3) Does not make you “better” than any other cyclist out there.

Anyways, if you’ve read this, keep cycling and don’t be a dick.
